Landscape Lighting FAQ

Everything you need to know about professional landscape lighting installation.

How much does it cost to run landscape lighting?
Very little. Low-voltage LED landscape lighting is extremely energy efficient. A typical 12-fixture system running 6 hours per night costs approximately $3–$6 per month in electricity at BC Hydro rates. The LED bulbs also last 25,000–50,000 hours — meaning you rarely if ever need to replace them. The running cost of landscape lighting is one of the most common surprises for new customers in a very positive way.
How do you protect the wiring from rain and winter?
All wiring is buried at least 6 inches underground in conduit or direct-burial cable rated for outdoor use. All connections are made with waterproof wire nuts and sealed with direct-burial silicone. The fixtures themselves are rated IP65 or higher — fully weatherproof and designed to handle Vancouver's wet winters year after year. We have never had a weather-related failure on a system we've installed.
Do I need to do anything to maintain the system?
Very little. We recommend a quick annual check of fixture positions in spring (frost heave and plant growth can shift fixtures slightly) and a lens wipe-down if lenses become dirty. The Hunter Luxor app will notify you of any connection issues. We offer an optional annual maintenance visit to check all fixtures, clean lenses, and update controller programming if your landscaping has changed.
Can you add lighting to an existing system?
Yes. If you have an existing low-voltage landscape lighting system we can add fixtures, upgrade fixtures to LED, install a new Luxor smart controller, or expand zones. We assess your existing transformer capacity and wiring before adding any load. If your transformer is undersized, we replace it as part of the upgrade — ensuring your system runs correctly with the additional fixtures.
What is the Hunter Luxor system and why does it matter?
Hunter Luxor is a professional-grade smart landscape lighting control system. Unlike basic plug-in timers, Luxor allows individual zone control, dimming from 0–100%, scene presets, sunrise/sunset scheduling, and smartphone app control. We are Hunter University Luxor certified — meaning we have completed manufacturer training specific to this system. Not all landscape lighting installers hold this certification, which means you get a properly programmed, fully featured smart system rather than a basic installation.
How long does installation take?
Most residential landscape lighting installations are completed in one day. A starter system of 6–10 fixtures typically takes 3–4 hours. A full property system with 20+ fixtures and 4+ zones usually takes 6–8 hours. We minimise disruption to your garden and always clean up fully before we leave. We schedule installations on days with low rainfall to ensure all wiring and connections cure properly.
